# A/B test: hide the coupon field behind “Have a code?”

> If we hide the discount code field behind a “Have a code?” link, then orders will rise, because a large empty field reminds people there is a discount they do not have, and they leave to look for it.

## Why it can work

A box labelled “Discount code” with an “Apply” button is a question: are you sure there isn't a 10% code out there? Plenty of people open a new tab, search your store name plus “discount code” and land on a site full of expired coupons. Some come back. Some don't.

Collapsed, anyone who has a code still finds the field, because they are looking for it. Anyone who doesn't never thinks about it.

## How to set it up

In Bixlow you describe the change to the agent, it builds it on your site and launches it as an A/B test once you approve it. A/B tests are on the paid plans, starting with Standard.

1. In the variant, replace the field with a small text link: “Have a discount code?”.
2. Clicking it opens the field in the same place, without reloading the page.
3. Do it in the cart and, if your platform allows it, in the checkout too. If you can only change one of them, keep it the same one in both versions.
4. Run it on all traffic, except visitors arriving from a link that already applies the code.

## What to measure

| | Metric |
| --- | --- |
| Primary metric | Orders per visitor |
| Metric that must not get worse | Orders using your active campaign codes |
| Where it is measured | On the order confirmation page |

> **When I would not test it.** If you live on code-based campaigns (influencers, newsletter, podcasts), many people arrive knowing they have a code and look for the field on purpose. Collapsing it can make them unsure where to enter it. In that case, try changing the link copy before hiding the field.

## FAQ

### Isn't hiding the coupon a bit sneaky?

Not if the link is visible and works. The field is still there for anyone with a code. You only remove a reminder for people who have none.

### My campaigns use codes. Will this hurt them?

It can, which is why orders with a code should be the metric that must not get worse. If they drop, the link is not visible enough.

### Does it work the same on mobile and desktop?

On mobile the field takes up more of the screen and leaving for another app to hunt for coupons is more common, so that is where it makes most sense. You can read the result split by device.
