Connect Stripe to Your Experiments: Paywalls and Pricing

Button colours are easy to test; the experiments that move revenue usually involve price. How to connect Stripe to your tests on paywalls and plans through a Function the AI writes, and how to keep billing safe while you do.

Testing copy and colours is fine. The experiment that moves the business most, though, usually involves price. When the paywall appears, which plan is highlighted, what each segment is offered: those are revenue decisions more than design decisions, and you can only judge them properly with real payment data.

Bixlow doesn't come with a Stripe integration you switch on. What it has is Functions: backend code that Bixlow hosts and runs for your project, with your Stripe key kept as an encrypted secret, called from your workflows. You ask the chat for what you need and the AI writes the Function, for instance one that checks with Stripe whether a checkout was actually paid. That lets you count completed payments as the goal of a pricing test instead of clicks on "buy".

Why test price at all

Price is the most underused growth lever there is. Small changes to how plans are presented, or to when the paywall shows up, have an effect on revenue out of all proportion to their size, much bigger than anything you'll get from tuning a button.

Without payment data you're testing half-blind. You can measure intent (clicks on "buy") but not the outcome (charges that went through), and the gap between the two is exactly where pricing experiments go wrong. Once the Function has confirmed the payment, the workflow records the conversion with window.bixlow.track, and Bixlow's results compare variants on paid conversions. If you also want the amounts per variant, the Function can write the experiment and variant into the payment's metadata, and you read the revenue in Stripe.

What you can test with Stripe in the loop

Some experiments with a lot riding on them:

  • when the paywall appears, meaning how many free views come first
  • which plan is highlighted by default on the pricing page
  • the price or discount offered to each segment
  • annual or monthly as the recommended option
  • a free trial that asks for a card against one that doesn't

Any of these can be run as a normal A/B test; the difference is that the winning arm is the one that gets more people to pay, not more people to click.

Without breaking billing

People are nervous about touching prices, and they're right to be. Most of the list above only changes what the visitor sees. A test that changes what someone is charged also needs the checkout to use the matching Stripe price, and that's where engineering should read the Function before it's published. The code is visible, it runs isolated per project and the key never reaches the browser.

Inside those limits, the growth team can test monetisation ideas at its own pace and judge each one on payments Stripe has confirmed. A good first candidate is the default plan on the pricing page, since it changes nothing about what anyone is charged for a given plan. Functions are on the Premium plan.
