A/B test: replace the home page slider with a clear headline

If you replace the home page carousel with one sentence that says what you sell, who it is for and what makes you different, then more visitors will move on to the catalogue, because they know in two seconds whether they are in the right place.

Why it might work

Think about how people land on your home page: from an ad, from searching your brand, from a link a friend sent them. They open it on their phone and the first thing they see is a big image that changes every four seconds. Slide one is about a sale, slide two about a collection, and nobody sees slide three.

A fixed sentence does a different job. "Speciality coffee roasted every week, free shipping over €49" tells that person what is here and why they should buy it here. If it fits, they go in. If not, they leave, but they were leaving anyway.

How to set it up

In Bixlow you describe the change to the agent, it builds it on your site and launches it as an A/B test once you approve it.

  1. Write the sentence: what you sell, who for, and one concrete advantage (shipping, origin, delivery time). No "quality and passion".
  2. In the variant, replace the slider with that sentence, one still image and a single button to your main category.
  3. Run it on the home page only, for all traffic. If most of your traffic is mobile, start with mobile.
  4. Let it run for full weeks, so Mondays and Sundays count the same.

Other variants worth trying

If removing the slider feels too drastic, keep a single still slide with the sentence on top. Or keep the carousel and pin the sentence above it. Those are gentler tests, and harder to measure for the same reason.

FAQ

Clear headline instead of the slider

Do home page sliders perform badly?

There is no universal rule. The usual problem is that only the first slide gets seen and that on mobile they fill the screen without saying what the store sells. That is why it is worth testing on your own site instead of removing it blindly.

What sentence should I use?

One that answers three things: what you sell, who it is for, and why buy it from you. If you are torn between two, that is your next test.

Why not measure sales directly?

You do, as the metric that must not get worse. But a lot happens between the home page and the order, so clicks into the catalogue give you a signal sooner.
